San Francisco Giants manager Bob Melvin, who put in Lee Jung-hoo, who was excluded from the starting lineup as a break, explained the background.

Melvin looked back on the day’s loss to the lowest team in the same district, saying, “Baseball is what can beat any team.”

“Matos is fine,” Melvin clarified that he did not put Lee Jung-hoo in because of a problem with starting center fielder Luis Matos, explaining, “We were a one-point lead, and we needed a good defender.”

However, Melvin’s plan did not work out. Tyler Rogers, who entered the game in the top of the eighth inning, allowed three hits and two runs, ultimately giving up the lead and losing the game.

“Sometimes it happens,” Melvin said of Rogers’ poor performance, adding, “I think you have to acknowledge the other person. He took a good approach and attacked it. It doesn’t happen often.”

San Francisco’s leadoff hitter Wilmer Flores reached base in the bottom of the eighth inning, but the team was unable to bring him around to score. Lee Jung-hoo grounded out to second base with two outs and a runner on first base.

Regarding the decision to use Lee Jung-hoo rather than two left-handed hitters, Melvin stated, “Lee Jung-hoo has shown he can hit left-handed pitching as well as right-handed.” He added, “Yaz also said he’s been doing well as a left-handed hitter this year.”

Despite leading the game through the sixth inning, the Giants were unable to come away with a victory.

Starting pitcher Justin Verlander allowed five hits, one home run, one walk, four strikeouts, and two runs in 6 1/3 innings. He has yet to secure a win this season.

Addressing Verlander’s performance, Melvin noted, “I think losing the game is more important than the win itself, but he threw well enough to earn a win.” He expressed regret that Verlander did not earn the win, despite his solid performance.
