“Hell, yeah,” Foskett said when asked if he was glad he stayed behind to defend his home. “My house would’ve gone, for sure – nothing has been burnt here for 90 years.”
Residents who fled the fire have been praised for their preparation and quick response. Firefighters contained the fire, but not before it caused significant damage.
The neighbor’s home was saved by Foskett, who created a fire break for three houses by scraping away leaf litter. “We created a fire break for three houses – we scraped all the leaf litter away,” Foskett said. “Because fire runs slowly down a hill, [the firebreak] stopped it.”
At 10am on Sunday, there were 76 fires burning across the state, with 20 uncontained.
