Original Post
Apple has announced CarPlay Ultra, an upgrade to its in-car software that allows drivers to customize their instrument cluster, access Apple Music playlists and Google Maps directions, monitor tire pressure, and control air-con settings from the CarPlay interface.
CarPlay Ultra’s features are completely customizable, including the instrument cluster theme and color scheme. This gives both car manufacturers and drivers the ability to design their ideal multi-screen setup for the most important features while driving. Though physical buttons remain an option, CarPlay Ultra aims to mirror the phone experience by integrating Siri for voice commands, and, when available, Apple Intelligence features developed with Open AI.
CarPlay Ultra will likely integrate with the upcoming Siri AI advancements and on-device Apple Intelligence features, allowing drivers to access advanced AI features in the car, such as having AI assistants complete tasks like drafting messages or generating meeting notes. At present, however, detailed information on Siri’s functionality with CarPlay Ultra is scarce.
It is important to note that Google announced its Gemini software for cars just days before Apple’s CarPlay Ultra reveal, and Google’s software seems to offer more advanced in-car AI capabilities at this point in time. Google’s software will be available in Android Auto cars in the next few months, which may give Android an edge when it comes to in-car AI integration.
