Original Post:

NSW has a shark monitoring program which includes issuing alerts when tagged sharks come within 500 metres of a receiver near 37 beaches between Tweed Heads and Bega.

There is no receiver at Kylies Beach, with the closest about 30 kilometres south at Old Bar.

Department of Primary Industries teams are en route and drone surveillance is being set up, Surf Life Saving NSW chief executive Steven Pearce told 2GB.

“Tragically, one young female has been fatally killed by a shark, and there’s another male that’s been flown to hospital.

“This area is so remote, there’s no life guarding services up there at all,” Pearce said.

The closest surf club is located to the south at Crowdy Head.

“These incidents are horrific for everyone, and unfortunately, we’ve had a few this year already,” Pearce said.
